Russia: Requires physical presence of Apple and other technology giants in the country

Η Russian government asks from 13 foreign technology companies to gain a physical presence Russia by the end of 2021. Russia mainly targets US technology companies, including Apple, and says if companies do not comply, they will come faced with restrictions and possible bans.

The Russian State Communications Regulatory Authority, Roscomnadzor, issued the request on Monday, and stressed that 13 foreign companies should be officially represented on Russian soil by the end of 2021.

Other U.S. technology companies that have been asked to respond to Russia's request are: Google the Facebook and Twitter. The list also includes TikTok and the Telegram.

On July 1, one came into force new law in Russia. According to him, the large social media companies (which have more than 500.000 users daily) offices should be opened in Russia.

However, according to Karen Kazaryan, head of the company Internet Research Institute, it is not clear what kind of representation or presence the new law dictates.

"There is no explanation in the law, no clarification as to what the legal form of company representation should beKazaryan told Reuters on Tuesday.

On the other hand, non-compliance with the legislation could lead to restrictions on advertising, data collection or money transfer. There may also be definitive bans.

The only clarification given by the Russian regulatory authority was:

"In addition to representation / presence in Russia, companies must open an account on the website of the regulatory authority and have a feedback form for interaction with Russian users".

In addition, Roskomnadzor said that foreign entities are obliged to restrict access to information that violates Russian law, but did not provide further details.
