However as says The space agency has no reason to panic, as its asteroid tracker says the "potentially dangerous" rock will simply pass 3.9 million kilometers from Earth on December 11.

Although the 330-meter-wide asteroid, which is called "4660 NireasUnlikely to pose a threat, it is projected to make 12 more nearby crossings in the coming decades.

The closest approach the egg-shaped asteroid will make is scheduled for February 14, 2060, when it will be just under 745.645 miles away. For comparison, the distance between the Earth and Moon is about 239.000 miles.

The asteroid was first discovered by scientists in 1982 and due to its narrow orbit on Earth is potentially accessible by spacecraft.

There are currently no scheduled missions to explore the asteroid, but the possibility has been considered. The robotic mission Near Earth Asteroid Rendezvous-Shoemaker (NEAR) of NASA and the Japanese mission Hayabusa they considered Nereus as a possible target, before going to other options.

Three countries have in the past landed spaceships on asteroids and are considered targets for future mining activities.

Last month, the United Arab Emirates announced plans for asteroid exploration missions and will become the first Arab country to do so.

Their missions are scheduled to begin in 2028 and will include the exploration of seven asteroids as well as Venus, culminating in the landing of asteroids in 2033.

It is not uncommon for large asteroids to pass close to Earth.

In March, a rock the size of the Golden Gate Bridge reached a distance of 2 million kilometers from Earth.

NASA classifies asteroids as "potentially dangerous" when they are 7.5 million kilometers from Earth and have a diameter of more than 152 meters.
