According to the DownDetector website, which detects internet outages, users started having problems around 9:40 p.m. GMT (4:40 PM EDT).

Many users have used it Twitter to share their problems, although at the moment it is not clear what the source of the outage is.

The Independent contacted Reddit for more information and the company appears to have acknowledged the problem.

"We are currently investigating the issue," said a tweet from the official Reddit Status account.

The shutdown follows problems with Snapchat, which went offline for a while last week, as well as Facebook - which ran into a very long shutdown that lasted five hours and went along with WhatsApp and Instagram.

The main reason for this interruption was an incorrect command during normal maintenance work, which shut down Facebook outside its workplace suite and the company was forced to have physical access to its data centers.
