Acer: Confirmed data breach after cyber attack

A hacking team has claimed to have breached Acer India's servers, with about 60 GB of sensitive data belonging to many of the company's millions of customers being leaked online.

Known as Desordern, the team said it stole customer information, corporate data, financial data and information related to recent company audits, according to a post on a popular hacking forum seen by Privacy Affairs researchers.

The hackers said the breach involved data on several million Acer customers, mostly from India. It seems to have taken place on October 5, as this is the latest date mentioned in the leaked databases.

Desordern also said it would give Acer access to the database to verify them data and prove that the violation is genuine. A sample of the data released for free, which included information on more than 10.000 people, was found to be accurate and genuine by Privacy Affairs researchers, who were able to contact some of the victims.

The group said data belonging to many millions of Acer customers will be released at a later date.

The spokesman added that the incident has been reported to local law enforcement authorities and the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team and there has been no substantial impact on the company's operations and operations.
