The Nintendo Switch was the top-selling console in terms of units sold in August. The more expensive PlayStation 5, however, came out No. 1 for dollar sales. That's according to industry watchdog The NPD Group, which has revealed that hardware costs are rising everywhere as gaming enthusiasts look for new consoles to play the latest games.
"Dollar sales of video game hardware for August increased by 45% compared to August 2020, to $ 329 million," said NPD analyst Mat Piscatella. "This is the highest total achieved in August since 2008 ($ 395 million) and the third highest total in August in history."
In the first eight months of 2021, spending is growing significantly on an annual basis thanks to the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X / S.
"Annual hardware costs have increased by 49% compared to the same period in 2020, totaling $ 3 billion," Piscatella said. "The Nintendo Switch was the platform hardware with the most unit sales both in August and throughout the year (to date), with the PlayStation 5 leading the way in both dollar sales. ”
When it comes to the new PlayStation 5, it continues to outperform its predecessors.
"After 10 months on the market, the PlayStation 5 remains the best-selling PlayStation platform in history," said Piscatella.
Sales of accessories, meanwhile, were stable at $ 164 million a year. But the category is up 12% to $ 1,6 billion from a year ago in the US.
"The Xbox Elite Series 2 wireless controller was the most-selling accessory in August," said Piscatella. "The PS5 DualSense Wirelessss Controller White remains the best-selling accessory for 2021."
