A report in the Russian media says that the attack is the largest in the short history of the Russian Internet, RuNet, and that it was confirmed by a US-based company.

RuNet is the Russian part of the Internet, created to operate independently of the World Wide Web. Its purpose is to maintain a unified communication infrastructure throughout the country that operates in the event of a cyber attack by a foreign adversary.

Services and data were not affected

According to the Russian newspaper Vedomosti, citing sources from Yandex, the attack data flow began hitting the company's servers over the weekend.

A source said Yandex had difficulty defending itself against the attack this week.

There are no details about the type of DDoS or its size, but the Russian publication states that the company Cloudflare confirmed "that this is a record-scale cyber attack".

It should be noted that Yandex in cooperation with Qrator Labs provides its customers with a DDoS protection service for cloud resources.

Vedomosti says its sources declined to provide more information about the attack due to ongoing internal control, but noted that the incident posed a "threat to infrastructure in national scale».

The Russian publication states that the representative of Yandex confirmed the DDoS attack and that the company's network infrastructure managed to filter the unwanted requests, as a result of which the provided services or the data of the users are not affected.

According to Alexander Lyamin, CEO of Qrator Labs, Yandex seems to have been targeted by a new botnet harnessing the power of network equipment from a supplier in the Baltic region. However, Yandex has not yet confirmed this information.
