Based on established LiDAR know-how in other industries, spatial information company Outsight has launched a new solution that uses LiDAR to create a 360 ° 3D map of a forest in real time and also allows on-site operators to collect data for each tree and tag-arun, day or night.

The LiDAR solution is based on an easy-to-carry box that incorporates special software. Using a tablet, users can collect data on the forest and each tree, individually and as a whole, as well as observations such as the exact location, characteristics, species and presence of insects. When they return to the office, they will have access to a detailed forest inventory with all their notes automatically highlighted on each tree. GPS location allows operators to overlap maps.

Equipped with this data, operators can access data-driven forestry management tactics, including pre-fire seasons. Because forestry management budgets are often tiny compared to the task of managing huge plots, the ability to make sound decisions will help to expand the resources.

The Outsight solution is already used by Insight Robotics based in Hong Kong, a leader in forest risk management. Insight uses the LiDAR system to complete aerial surveys for better forest and plantation management. It can also monitor forest ecosystem responses to climate change, biodiversity, deforestation, dead trees and possibly prevent the spread of disease to trees.
