IBM claims to have taken an important step in chip technology by creating the world's first 2nm chip. The company says it has compressed 50 billion transistors into a chip the size of a fingernail.
Its architecture could help processor manufacturers offer a 45 percent increase in performance with the same amount of power as current 7nm-based chips or the same level of performance using 75% less power, IBM says. Many 2nm-based processors will probably offer something in the meantime, a better performance balance and improved power efficiency.
Portable devices with 2nm-based processors could have up to four times the battery life of those with a 7nm chipset. IBM claims that you may need to charge these handsets every four days. Laptops could increase their speed from these processors, while autonomous vehicles would detect and react faster to objects, according to IBM. The company claims that the technology will benefit its fans efficiency data center power, space exploration, artificial intelligence, 5G and 6G, and quantum computing.
IBM seems to have made the discovery of 2nm chips before its competitors. The Apple M1 and A14 arrived with Huawei Kirin 9000 last fall as the first processors based on TSMC's 5nm process node process. Other manufacturers, such as AMD and Qualcomm, usually use TSMC 7nm chips, although Qualcomm's Snapdragon 888 is made with Samsung 5nm technology. As for Intel, the company is unlikely to release 7nm processors by 2023. It currently uses 10nm and 14nm chips. However, Intel chips tend to have higher chip densities than their competitors. TSMC, meanwhile, is also working on a 2nm process and expects to start producing 4nm and 3nm volumes next year.
It is not clear when 2nm processors will be switched to consumer devices, but the announcement of 2nm chips and their scale construction are different challenges. IBM plans to release the first commercial 7nm processors this year on Power Systems servers. Although 2nm processors are probably a few years away from coming to portable computers and phones, at least it is good to know that the most powerful and efficient processors are in progress.
