VW (Volkswagen) has launched a new project to launch a new solar yacht in collaboration with Silent Yachts using the MEB platform for electric vehicles and a project by the CUPRA team.
Silent Yachts, sometimes described as "Tesla of the seas", produces boats powered by solar power and batteries.
Depending on the size, they can produce between 10 and 26 kW of solar energy and are equipped with capacity battery from 150 to 532 kWh.
VW deals with solar yachts
Michael Jost, head of Volkswagen brand strategy team and CSO, explains:
Within the Volkswagen Group, we have created an innovation fund to promote innovative business ideas. About 18 months ago, they presented me with a project on the use of MEB on a boat. At first, I thought the idea was absurd. But then we met the potential partner, Silent-Yachts. We were really impressed with the company's dedication to the project. I then discussed with Michael Köhler what we could offer in an upcoming collaboration.
The goal is for VW CUPRA to design a new version of the Silent Yatchs solar yacht. The company wants to launch the first Silent-Yachts next year - and produce 50 boats a year.
