Dell allows hardware privacy checks on Linux

Do you want to make sure your webcam and microphone are turned off? Dell adds code to Linux to support hardware privacy controls.

Working from home has created problems that we did not really expect to face. Just ask author Jeffrey Toobin, who was caught, to masturbate to one Zoom call. It would not be nice if you could be sure of the camera and the microphone were you disabled? Dell believes this and offers the Linux kernel code to support "Dell Privacy controls".

Dell Privacy Drivers support the latest laptops her? These key combinations prevent each application to have access to the built-in microphone and their camera laptops of. To ensure that the microphone cannot be used for listening, press ctrl + F4. To lock the camera, press ctrl + F9.

Once this new code is embedded in the Linux kernel, no program will have access to the audio or video streams. Since this works at the operating system level, in addition to making it more difficult for accidents to occur, it also excludes spyware software or other types of malware trying to hide in the systems.

Of course, this is not the first time privacy has been integrated into a Linux laptop. The specialized Linux vendor purism, for example, has long made both privacy and strict software support open source as its trademark. Its cameras already have hardware for blocking video and audio streams.

That said, it is even more remarkable that one of the largest PC vendors in the world believes that Linux operating system is so important to its audience that it is launching its new "privacy hardware" feature from the beginning.
