A group of celebrities, including Kim Kardashian West and Michael Jordan, are taking part in a 24-hour Instagram boycott.
On Wednesday, Kim Kardashian and other celebrities said they would join the Instagram "freeze" as part of the movement Stop Hate For Profit, to protest what the organization calls: "The repeated failures of Facebook to deal with hate speech and misinformation of elections on its platforms.»
A large number of well-known advertisers, including Starbucks, Coke and Verizon, cut its social media advertising budget this summer after Stop Hate For Profit called on advertisers to boycott it Facebook for the month of July. The goal, the team said, was to force the company to take more stringent measures to stop the spread of hate speech and misinformation on its platform, according to CNBC.
In particular, the organization wants Facebook to remove groups that promote "white supremacy", hatred and violent conspiracies. It aims to ban any page or event that raises the issue of war, and to eliminate exceptions for politicians, political content and voting content, among other demands.
In a recent incident, Facebook seems to have refused to remove a page of a paramilitary group based in Kenosha, Wisconsin, despite hundreds of alerts from users that the page promotes violence and glorifies weapons. Police in riot gear stormed a rally on Friday, removing hundreds of protesters by truck. Jacob Blake, a man of color, was shot dead by police. Facebook only removed the page when a gunman killed two people during a protest, a mistake made by the CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, later called "operational error".
Now the organization is turning its attention to Facebook subsidiary Instagram, asking users to join a 24-hour boycott, in which they will make a post criticizing the company and not other posts for the rest of the day.
In addition to Kim Kardashian, participants in the Instagram boycott include Katy Perry, Ashton Kutcher, Sacha Baron Cohen, Naomi Campbell, Judd Apatow, Amy Schumer, Sarah Silverman, Kate Hudson, Leonardo DiCaprio, Rosario Dawson, Isla Fisher, Scooter and Mark Ruffalo.
