Wattpad breach exposes information to millions of users

An allegedly stolen Wattpad database containing 270 million records sold for over $ 100.000. It is now offered for free in hacking forums.

Wattpad is a site that allows members to post their stories on a variety of different topics. THE website is extremely popular and is ranked as the 150th most visited website in the world.

The news of the sale of the database reached BleepingComputer by Shiny Hunters, a group known for selling databases companies obtained in data breaches.

At the time, Cyble said the database was selling for ten bitcoins, or almost $ 100.000 at the time.

Some sample records contain usernames, usernames, hashed passwords, addresses e-mail and location information.

Kiel Hume, Wattpad's Director of PR & Communications, said he was working with external security consultants to investigate the possible breach.

Hume also said that Wattpad was working to reduce and redress the breach, but that they did not have access to financial information, phone numbers or private messages during the event.

The Wattpad database is now offered for free in a hacking forum

While the database was previously sold at a high price of $ 100.000, the database is now offered for free and claims to contain 271 million users.

Today, a new user signed up for a hacking forum using the name and photo of ZDNet journalist Catalin Cimpanu and started offering this alleged database for free.

Cimpanu is probably fake because of his recent article on breach of security company NightLion, which he claims will expose ID card of Shiny Hunters and other data breach vendors this week.

The user who provides this database claims that 145 million passwords have been hashed with bcrypt and the other 44 million are encrypted with SHA256.

The number of users reported to be in this stolen database conflicts with 80 million users reported on the Wattpad in 2019.

We will inform you of any new information about the event.
