Chrome 80: Troubleshoots a stolen credentials store

The slight change in the Google Chrome 80 browser has had a devastating effect on one of the top cybercrime shopping outlets.

According to a new study released by ZDNet this week from KELA, the Genesis Store is going through a difficult phase right now, seeing a 35% decrease in the number of hacked credentials sold on the site.

KELA says Genesis managers are currently trying to correct their stock deficits and supply the store with new credentials before customers see a drop in supply.

We could say that unless the problems caused by the new Chrome 80 update are addressed, the store's future doesn't look very promising.

What is Genesis?

The Genesis Store is a unique entity and pioneer in the cyber crime landscape.

These fingerprints are a virtual image of a user's identity in one online website.

Fingerprints include basic details about a user's account, such as a username and password, but also more detailed information like old IP addresses user cookies, browser cookies, user strings, and other operating system technical details.

Genesis customers can buy from Facebook fingerprints and other social media accounts to fingerprints from the largest Companies of the world.

Because these fingerprints are extremely detailed and include information other than usernames and passwords, hackers can often access accounts which are protected by certain forms of identification such as 2FA.

Bypassing 2FA has made Genesis one of the most popular cybercrime shops.

Genesis has evolved from a small store to selling 60,000 fingerprints in March 2019.

Currently, the store plays an important role in many cybercrime, as many groups of hackers often purchase stolen fingerprints from Genesis to carry out their actions.

Many of the Genesis fingerprints come from Azorult injections

The website's internal operations have remained a mystery since Kaspersky's experts first reported its existence in March 2019.

In recent months, KELA Product Manager Raveed Laeb has made significant efforts to study the Genesis Store beyond Kaspersky's original report to understand how it works. website.

One of the ways Laeb checked out was the source of all the stolen fingerprints. While some researchers claimed that the fingerprints of the site were collected through malware installed on infected workstations, they did not know which malware was responsible for all of them. data sold on the site.

To figure this out, Laeb said he scraped across the Store Genesis for all stolen fingerprints and then graded each listing based on the GUID (general user ID) that is next to each fingerprint.

While Laeb suspects there are multiple gangs of malware running separate botnets of AZORult malware and then providing stolen fingerprints to Genesis administrators, it is quite clear to an outside observer that AZORult is Genesis' primary weakness.

For example, if something happens to AZORult malware, the entire Genesis store will be compromised, with virtually no alternative for Genesis administrators.

The 8th Chrome update "destroys" Genesis

And that's exactly what happened in early February 2020, when Google released Chrome 80.

With Chrome 80, Google changed using the AES-256 algorithm to hash the passwords locally stored in Chrome's internal SQLite database.

This switch to AES-256 results in passwords stored in Chrome in a different format than before. Although it's a tiny change within code Chrome, this small change has paralyzed AZORult's ability to extract passwords from Chrome.

This Chrome update had a direct and huge impact on functions of Genesis.

Without the constant introduction of new fingerprints, the store's database has also shrunk to 335.000 stolen credentials σε περίπου 200.000 – 230.000.

Laeb said things didn't look good for the website unless they switched to another malware strain and replaced AZORult.

However, while Chrome 80 killed AZORult, other malware executives had no problem updating codes including a Raccoon Stealer update released a few days after the release of Chrome 80.

Laeb said that in recent days Genesis managers seem to have stopped adding new AZORult fingerprints altogether and are now constantly adding new fingerprints that have been stolen with the help of a tiny yet unidentified strain.

However, new listings are not yet at the levels they were last year, and the problem of the Genesis Store remains an issue.
