If you are a web developer or want to become one, Notepad ++ is a must have tool for your business. Apart from editing files, the application has a very fast way of modifying the code directly on your server using an FTP client.
Getting to know Notepad ++
Notepad ++ is an open source word processing software for Windows users. It is the top choice for many developers due to its countless features.
However, the use of the application can be expanded by adding various add-ons available to improve software functionality. One of them is NppFTP. The tool lets you use Notepad ++ to connect to your server via an FTP connection, so you can edit your files instantly to make changes to your site.
Create FTP connection with Notepad ++
Download and install Notepad ++ on your computer if it doesn't already exist.
Run the application and follow the Plugins - Plugins Admin route.
Once the above window appears, select NppFTP, click Install and the application will restart.
Then follow the Plugins - NppFTP - Show NppFTP Window path. A settings window will appear on the right side of the application.
Select Add new, enter the profile name and press OK.
Then provide the FTP server login details on the Login tab (host name, port, username, password).
Click Close to save the settings.
Finally, you will see a folder icon on the login button. Click to see the server content in the right panel of the application. To open a folder you are interested in, type its name and press OK. In the example below, we will open the public_html folder.
Editing files on the server via Notepad ++
It's time to edit the files on your server. All you need to do is:
Double-click the files you want to edit.
When you're done, click the Save button to apply the changes.
Of course, before making any changes, it is advisable to back up to avoid unpleasant surprises.
