Home Updates Edge Chromium was officially released for Windows 7 and 8.1

Edge Chromium was officially released for Windows 7 and 8.1

Microsoft today announced the launch of a Edge Chromium browser preview for devices running Windows 7, 8 and 8.1.

The Chromium-based Microsoft Edge browser uses the same kernel used by Google Chrome and other browsers such as Vivaldi, Opera and Brave.

Edge Chromium

Microsoft originally released it Browser for its Windows 10 operating system, but later released for Apple devices. So today it is officially released for both Windows 7 and Windows 8.1. There is currently no release for Linux distributions.

Microsoft's current strategy seems to focus not only on Windows 10, although it was initially used to make the upgrade to Windows much more attractive.

Downloads are already available at official webpage Microsoft Edge Insider. Just visit the page and click the download button next to the operating system you want to install Edge.

Currently, only the version from Canary Channel for Windows 7 and 8.1 is available. Canary is an actively growing version. The version of Dev Channel is only available for Windows 10, and the first versions of Beta Channel will be released shortly, so far no version is available.

Microsoft reports that experience for older platforms is "pretty much the same" as Windows 10, and that features such as the upcoming Internet Explorer simulation feature will also be available on devices running Windows 7 and 8.1.

The new Microsoft Edge browser differs in many ways from Chrome and other Chromium-based browsers. It has some extensions that are only available for that browser, while it also supports Google Chrome extensions.

Microsoft has not yet revealed the release date of the new version of the new browser.
