We have heard many cases where hackers send Phishing emails to employees of the finance departments of various companies and pretending to be their employers. Then their ask for large sums of money, which are given by employees as they think is their employer's order.
Hackers are constantly developing new ways to deceive their victims and steal money or gain access to data. The new method of cheating shows the researchers security how to use artificial intelligence (AI) and voice recording by hackers to accomplish attacks.
The attack took place in March. A scammer phoned the CEO of an energy company in the United Kingdom and represented the director of the German parent company. The researchers believe that the rogue used artificial intelligence software to imitate the voice of the German manager. The English CEO said that recognized the German pronunciation and other features of the German director and therefore did not suspect the call was false.
According to the Englishman, the German manager said there was an urgent need to transfer 243.000 dollars to account of a Hungarian supplier. He was given an hour to do the transportation.
The transfer actually took place and then the money was sent to others countries. Hackers have contacted the UK company on several occasions and demanded money transfers, but the CEO began to suspect something strange was happening and did not send the money.
Investigations into the case continue to this day. The Wall Street Journal says this is the first time it has done so attack, where rogues use artificial intelligence to imitate one's voice. From now on we will definitely see more such attacks, which will allow hackers to deceive many companies. The worrying thing is that there is still no technology that could detect and prevent these scams.
