Blockchain technology to deal with attacks on power plants

BlockchainThe US government agency, Department of Energy, is trying to tackle online attacks to power plants, turning its attention to blockchain technology.

The National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) cooperates with the newly established security company Taekion, former Grid7, to investigate how the blockchain technology can be used to protect a power plant from online attacks.

An attack on an energy plant could show the plant as functional, but in fact it has shut down its operation, leaving millions of people out of power.

The above example of attack is not hypothetical. Such an attack has already taken place at a Ukrainian factory, 2016, and caused extensive power cuts during the winter.

"Applications deployed in the NETL managed project have the potential to prevent such attacks preventing hackers from modifying factory management information, "NETL said.

Taekion is planning to create other applications that will help make it more secure.

The Department of Energy has attempted to explore blockchain technology in the past. Last year he had worked with BlockCypher for similar purposes.

The project is funded by the Small Business Innovation Research program. However, a federal 4,8 million dollar funding has been announced recently for universities working on R & D projects, including those related to blockchain.
