It seems to be the beginning of a new generation of ultra-fast Wi-Fi standard to be used in the future. However, do not expect them to be used for Internet browsing.

Current Wi-Fi technology is already on the verge of a major upgrade with the Wi-Fi 6. Over the next year, we will see phones, laptops, routers and other Internet-enabled devices with Wi-Fi 6 support.

But the announcement has nothing to do with it. The new chipsets are to be used for specific purposes, such as wireless high-speed data transfer to VR headsets. In essence, it is something like a wireless connection created for an exclusive purpose.

This technology has the official name 802.11ay, also known as WiGig. It uses a 60GHz hardware to deliver more speed in addition to the 2,4 GHz and 5 GHz radio bands in the common Wi-Fi router.

But high speed comes with a disadvantage - the signal can not pass through the walls. This means we can use it only when the transmitter and the receiver are in the same space without any obstacle between them.

This limitation makes it unclear whether this technology will be successful but can greatly improve the experience of VR games and similar purposes. In a way, WiGig will compete with 5G, which uses radio waves in a similar way to deliver fast speeds at a limited distance.

But all this is going to happen in the future and now the only thing to turn to our attention is the upcoming Wi-Fi 6. Make sure that the router you buy has support for it.
