Jetson Xavier: New AI chip from Nvidia for standalone machines

Η Nvidia just announced a chip named Jetson Xavier, which will have equal computing power with a current 10.000 dollar system, and will be sold at the 1.299 Australian dollar (about 850). This chip is not for your laptop but for use in a robot.

"This little computer will be the brain of future robots"

"Robots that will ride, fly, swim, pick up strawberries, lettuce, apples that will help you in the lab," Huang explained, "this small computer will be the brain of future smart machines. "He added.

Jetson Xavier is equipped with six processors that can run 30 trillion operations per second. It took five years to complete the final product, three years for design, and two years for architecture and more than 8000 people who worked on the project.

"This is the largest design process for a processor we've ever done in our company," he said. "It has about the same processing power as a 10.000 dollar workstation equipped with multiple GPUs," Huang added. Such a system would expect to consume 1000 watt. Now we have all this power in the size of our palm and consumes only 30 watt! "

It is not Nvidia's first attempt to create a chip for AI. Existing technology is already being used by companies for autonomous robots in warehouses, robots for fruit harvesting and agriculture robots. Jetson Xavier, however, is 20 times stronger than the previous Nvidia AI chips and is estimated to be available for sale by August of 2018, according to Huang.
