Word, Excel, and PowerPoint Viewer applications have been specially developed to allow users to open documents created in Microsoft Office without having to install the fully-equipped productivity suite. These applications were introduced when Microsoft updated the default document format for Office applications.
But now the company decides to withdraw their support, with a different scheduled date for each one.
Word Viewer, for example, is expected to be retired in November while the PowerPoint Viewer and Excel Viewer are released in April 2018.
Microsoft reports that Windows 10 users can download Office mobile apps from the Windows Store completely free of charge.
Note that Office 365 is available as an alternative to a free trial available for a month, while in earlier versions of Windows, users can switch to OneDrive for cloud-based files.
Download links will be removed but applications will continue to collaborate with Office documents even after the end of the support, although it is important to know that Microsoft will not send new security updates beyond those dates.
Great attention, then, as well any vulnerabilities detected in applications will allow cybercriminals to compromise your system or gain access to data stored on local drives.
