A new study by Sensor Tower reveals applications downloaded by users during the first quarter of this year, with Facebook applications dominating the Android and iOS charts. Therefore, the top application for iOS-based downloads was Messenger, followed by WhatsApp, Bitmoji, Instagram and Facebook.
As for Android, the Facebook application is at the top of the table, followed by WhatsApp, Messenger, Instagram and Snapchat. Apparently iOS and Android users see social networking applications as the most important and most popular. Facebook applications will certainly continue to grow in popularity, especially since the company announced its new AI assistant for Messenger implementation.
While Facebook has managed to dominate the apps market, in terms of downloads, audio and video streaming applications have recorded the largest revenue. Netflix recorded worldwide revenue of 133 million dollars, up to 286% more than last year.
Worldwide, global downloads increased from 11.9 billion to 13.5 billion, compared with last year, thus recording an increase of 14%. Yet 4,7 billion downloads were made for apps in the App Store, while Google Play Store recorded a total of 8,8 billion downloads. This is no surprise as the number of smartphones with Android operating system is much larger than the number of smartphones iOS.
But their users iPhone spend more money on applications, with the latest study showing that 1,7 billions of dollars of total earnings came from the App Store, while Google Play raised 504 million dollars in revenue. It is worth noting that the numbers do not include game revenue, a segment that is quite popular in the App Store and is a major revenue source for the platform.
